I fretted over it when I wrote the piece (having lived in the Deep South for over a decade now, I in fact consider myself a Southerner-in-training), but decided that it would be too clumsy to not just use "Southerner" as a shorthand. But I've come up with a different formulation now that ought to be a little better. Consider it pointed out.
